There are several lies circulating around Costa Rica you will discover when you visit here (like Costa Rica not having a military).
One of the biggest ones is that Ticos are Americans.
Ticos are not Americans.
Ticos get frustrated when people from the United States of America call themselves Americans.
Ticos explain that since Costa Rica is located in Central America, they are also Americans.
This is simply not the case.
Canada and Mexico are also located in the Americas, yet these people will refer to themselves as Canadians and Mexicans, not Americans.
Nicaragua is also in Central America, but Ticos will call somebody from Nicaragua a Nicaraguense, not an American.
There are several countries in North America, Central America, and South America, but only those from the United States of America are referred to as Americans.
